Introductory and Advanced

The intensives offer dance teachers and professional dancers an opportunity to delve into the fundamental principles of the Humphrey/Limón technique as an expressive art form. Introductory and Advanced levels guide participants to develop an individual approach to Limón-based teaching.


Open to experienced dance teachers and Limón-trained dancers, the workshop will examine the use of Humphrey/Limón principles in contemporary dance training.
This program includes:

• Daily technique classes
• Exploration of the underlying principles
• Phrases from repertory (contemporary and classic)
• Use of rhythm and music in Limón classes
• Participants will have opportunities to teach class work and phrase material

Monday, August 14th to Saturday, August 19th. 10am – 4:30pm.
Optional evening class Mon-Fri 6:00pm – 7:30pm.

This workshop is intended as an extension of the introductory teacher’s workshop.  The emphasis will be on creating and analyzing class material, as well as examining approaches to teaching and giving feedback.  With a continued look at the subtleties of the H/L principles and the implications of how they can affect contemporary dance training, the workshop will focus on class structure and presenting phrases for a variety of class situations.  It is designed to guide each participant to find an individual approach to Limón-based teaching.

A practicum will be created based on the underlying principle specific to the Limón technique.
This practicum will offer:

  • The analysis of each principle and its physical application;
  • A defined class plan adapted to your current student; population;
  • Music guide for phrase building;
  • Benchmarks for various technical abilities and age groups

Participants can also apply to teach open evening classes during the workshop (Intermediate level). Please select this option during your online registration.  Eligibility:

  • Prior participation in at least 1, preferably 2, Limón Institute workshops for dancers or for teachers;
  • Minimum of 6 years of teaching experience;
  • Please provide 2-3 minute video documentation of the applicant teaching 2 different movement phrases and its objectives.

Introductory: $600 USD plus $30 registration fee.

What happens if I need to withdraw?

A refund will only be considered by written cancellation before July 14, 2017, and where necessary, a doctor’s note must be provided. A non-refundable $30 registration fee and $275 tuition deposit are applicable in all cases.



What are the Workshop dates?

Both Introductory and Advanced Levels run from Monday August 14th to Saturday August 19th.

Registration is at 9:30am on Monday August 14th.

Both levels run together for 2 hour morning technique class and a principles session.  After a lunch break, there will be two afternoon sessions, ending at 4:30pm.

Open evening classes (intermediate level) are offered Monday to Friday 6pm-7:30pm.

Where is the Workshop located?

Limón is pleased to partner with L’Espace du Movement to host the workshop, which will be located at Circuit – Est centre chorégraphique.  The studio address is 1881 Saint-André #100, Montréal, Québec, located in the city center. See below for travel directions.

Can I attend part-time?

Part time is not offered. All participants must attend the 6-day schedule.  No late starts.

What is a typical day?

The anticipated day to day schedule is from 10am- 4:30pm.

10:00 – 12:00  Technique Class
12:00 – 13:00  Principles Sessions
1:00 – 2:00  Lunch and Journal Break
2:00 – 4:30  Afternoon Workshop

Participants will also be required to observe one or more evening class(es), which are open to the public (Monday to Friday 6pm-7:30pm).

Can I observe workshop sessions?

Observing class/workshop sessions is only permitted if you are fully registered for the workshop.  You are expected to participate in all movement and pedagogical sessions unless you have an injury or mobility issues.

Do I need teaching experience or previous experience in Limón Technique?

The workshop is open to teachers and graduates of teaching programs. It is also open to dancers trained in the Humphrey/Limón tradition who are interested in learning to teach the technique. It is designed to guide each participant to find and individual approach to Limón-based teaching.

Advanced Level: eligible participants must have completed a Limón Institute workshop for teachers.

Will I be required to teach? What should I prepare?

This workshop is open to experienced dance teachers and Limón-trained dancers. Participants in both levels will have opportunities to teach class work and phrase material; only participants in the advanced workshop will have the opportunity to teach the evening classes.   Teachers will be required to identify their current or prospective student population as they register for the course.

What do I gain from completing the workshop?

At the conclusion of this workshop and dependent on your full attendance, you will receive a letter of completion from the Limón Institute, part of the José Limón Dance Foundation.  A Limón teacher is not created in 1 or 2 short workshops!  The letter of completion in no way endorses your teaching ability, nor does it license you as a qualified Limón teacher.
