Kent Summer Workshop 2017

Join Roxane D’Orleans Juste and Brenna Monroe-Cook for a 3-week summer intensive located at Kent State University, Ohio.

Open to Intermediate and Advanced level dancers, the workshop offers training in Humphrey/Limón:

  • Daily Limón Technique classes
  • Limón Repertory and New Repertory
  • Performance Technique workshops
  • Registration options: Full-time 3-week or 2-week; Part-time 3-week or 1-week mornings only


  • Optional individual mentoring
  • Special events, lectures and film showings
  • Final studio performance open to public
  • On-site accommodation

Attendance options:
Full time 3 weeks: July 24 – August 11, dance sessions Monday to Friday only.  Registration Sunday July 23.
Full time 2 weeks: July 24 – August 4 only.  No late starts. Registration Sunday July 23.
Part-time 3 weeks: July 24 – August 11, morning sessions only.
Part-time 1 week: July 24-28, morning sessions only.
Part-time attendance is 10am Technique class and 12pm Limón Repertory. Ideally attend registration day Sunday July 23. Not eligible to stay on campus.

The workshop will conclude with an informal presentation of repertory on Friday, August 11, approximately 1:00-3:00.

A $30 registration fee and $150 tuition deposit  is due at time of registration.  A $100 housing deposit is required once this option is selected. Deposits are deductible from the total fees due. Registration fee and deposits are non-refundable.

When is final payment due?

Final payment is due no later than July 10th, 2017.

How do I make a payment?

By Credit Card – MasterCard/Visa/Amex. Payment is made at the time of online application.

By Check (USA only) – Make checks payable to José Limón Dance Foundation and send to: José Limón Dance Foundation, 466 West 152nd Street, New York, NY 10031. Please include the Registration ID number given to you once you have completed the online application. You can also pay by eCheck through PayPal. In order to do so, you would need to set up a PayPal account through their website and select the PayPal payment option when asked on the online application.

How do I apply?

All registrations are made online.  Click here to complete the online application form.

No audition is required.  Experience in the Limón technique is preferred but not necessary. Dancers should have an understanding and experience in modern/contemporary dance forms and be working at Intermediate or Advanced level. Can you give more information about the Technique classes and Repertory sessions?

Below are examples of classes and workshop sessions.  Exact details to be confirmed at registration.

Limón Technique (10:00am – 11:45am) led by Company members to provide rigorous training and features the use of breath, weight, opposition, isolation, succession, musicality and expressive gesture.

Limón Repertory (12:00pm – 1:30pm)

  • Limón Repertory – 2 levels: Repertory classes will teach excerpts from large ensemble classic Limón works, with an emphasis on performance quality, style, and musicality.

Limón Repertory (2:30pm – 4:00pm)

  • Limón Repertory – 2 levels: Repertory classes will teach excerpts from small ensemble or solo classic Limón works, with an emphasis on performance quality, style, and musicality.

Is there a dress code?

 There is no formal dress code, however close-fitting, good condition dance clothing is expected with modest torso coverage.  No cropped tops please. Shoes are not required.

Is there a performance?

In addition to a full schedule of daily classes, the workshop concludes with an informal presentation on Friday August 12 at 1pm. This showing is free and open to the public.

The dance studios are located at 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent, Ohio 44242
The dormitory is located at 1475 Eastway Drive, Kent, Ohio 44242

Parking is available on KSU, Fullerton campus and parking permits can be purchased when registering for the workshop.

Akron-Canton Airport (airport code CAK, 30-40 minutes from campus) and  Cleveland Airport (airport code: CLE, 55 minutes from campus).

Housing information

On-campus accommodation is offered.

Double room with private bath includes: linens, refrigerator & microwave, A/C, wifi, weekly housekeeping, laundry on site (must have debit/credit card).

Check in on July 23 from 12pm.

No extra nights available.

Meal plan is not available.
Limited kitchen facilities in common area of dormitory building. Organized grocery store visits off-campus.  On campus food facilities are closed on weekends due to summer schedule.

Can I apply for a scholarship?

There is a small scholarship fund available, which, if awarded, will reduce your tuition fee only.   When registering, please select the Scholarship check box.  You will also find details there about the process. Audition is by DVD or video link only.  Please only make a partial tuition payment until you receive a decision.
Deadline for scholarship applications is March 30th.   Successful applicants will be notified by April 10th.

What happens if I need to withdraw from the workshop?

A refund will only be considered by written cancellation before June 25, 2017, and where necessary, a doctor’s note must be provided. A non-refundable $30 registration fee, $150 tuition deposit, and/or $100 housing deposit are applicable in all cases.
